County BUSTED!
Tower
of Shoes, a Tribute to Lost Soles
In conjunction
with Kick Butts Day, a Tower of Shoes in the Great Hall of
Ridley High School symbolized the 1,200 who die every day
form tobacco-related illness. It proved an effective way for
BUSTED! members from five area schools to get their message
across - tobacco use kills.
Students
form Ridley, Penncrest, Interboro, Strath Haven and The Country
Day School of the Sacred Heart high schools collected a total
of 1,455 pairs of shoes for the display. Each BUSTED! group
held contests in their individual schools to collect the shoes.
Interboro high school held a movie night and asked each student
to bring a pair of shoes for admission. Penncrest high school
held a competition between freshmen, sophomores, juniors and
seniors and awarded a cash prize to the winning class. The
individual schools then brought all the shoes to Ridley high
school and stacked the shoes in a pyramid design against one
of the large windows.
The exhibit
received a lot of attention as the 2,000 + students at Ridley
High School walked by all day as they went to their classes.
One student said, “It’s one thing to put up posters
about not smoking and another to get the students involved
in things like this.” Ridley High School’s BUSTED!
president commented, “A lot of students said how effective
it is.” Lastly, a Strath Haven High School BUSTED! member
noted, “The Shoe Tower brings the message home better
than what they could learn in the classroom.”
Apart
form the success and impact of collecting and displaying that
large an amount of shoes, the real success came in five high
schools who most of the time are rivals, coming together for
a single goal: to educate their peers about the dangers of
tobacco use. The student’s efforts did not go unnoticed
as the local papers and television stations covered and broadcasted
stories about the event.
