'Smoke-Free Wednesdays' Launches in Media
MEDIA,
PA—The Borough of
Media will launch Smoke-Free Wednesdays in
eateries across the town beginning Feb. 13.
A
partnership between the Delaware
County Tobacco-Free Coalition and the Borough of
Media, Smoke-Free Wednesdays is an effort to
promote smoke-free dining in Delco and is a symbolic
step in the right direction. The campaign not only seeks
to educate business owners on the benefits of providing
clean indoor air for customers, but also encourages
patrons to leave their cigarettes at home for at least
one day a week.
Studies
show that smoke-free dining is good for business.
According to a recent Cornell University study,
nonsmokers spend two and a half more times the amount of
money at a restaurant than do smokers and the majority
of Pennsylvanians don't smoke (75 percent).
Smoke-Free Wednesdays in Media is already off to a
good start. Many businesses in Media joined in previous
years' campaigns, and have since remained completely
smoke-free.

Pinocchio's
Restaurant on Baltimore Pike participated in the
2006 Great American Smoke Out campaign by going
smoke-free for just one day in November. To Pinocchio's
owner, Ted Volikas the benefits of smoke-free dining
were as clear as the air inside his restaurant that day.
“It’s what the public wants,” says Volikas. “We did it
as part of our image - we’re a family restaurant. Kids
come here to eat.”
When the
Tobacco-Free Coalition began promoting smoke-free dining
in 2003, only about 50 restaurants were smoke-free in
Delaware County. Today the number has skyrocketed to
over 360 clean-air eateries. This jump alone is strong
evidence that Delco business owners are becoming more
aware of the advantages of going smoke-free.
