World No Tobacco Day
Essay Contest Reading
Students from Delaware County schools
were asked to participate in a World No Tobacco Day
Essay Contest. "Tobacco Health Warnings" - the theme for
this year's World No Tobacco Day, reinforces the need to
step up graphic warnings on tobacco packages to
discourage consumers from using any form of tobacco
products. The essayists took the opportunity to make a
stand against the dangers of tobacco use.
Essay Contest Winners:
1st Place: Colin Mallee
2nd Place: Victoria Meinhart
3rd Place: Jordan Scargall
The following are excerpts from
the three winning essays:
"If everybody does their part to
help lower the risk of their children being exposed to
tobacco, then we can find a way to solve the problem
nationally. One person's voice can inspire thousands to
speak up and fight against the use and exposure of
tobacco." - Colin Mallee
"It is important that children
learn about smoking and tobacco so they will know the
dangers and risks. Communities need to have programs
that will educate people and maybe they won't be tempted
to smoke." - Victoria Meinhart
"We need labels that not only
deter, but help create a stronger mindset against drugs
altogether." - Jordan Scargall
Below are pictures from the
1st ever World No Tobacco Day Essay Contest Reading,
which took place at Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems in
